SAYAAN Connect: Uniting South Asian Queer Activists

The South Asian Young Queer Activist Network (SAYAAN) is a regional platform that brings together young queer activists from South Asian countries to promote dialogue, exchange solutions, and create visibility for the gender and sexuality minority (GSM) community, with a specific focus on youth. SAYAAN aims to foster connections and collaboration among LGBTQ+ activists and advocates in South Asia. It includes activists from Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Maldives, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, who have been actively involved in working with the GSM community in their respective countries.

The secretariat of SAYAAN is currently run by Prantakatha, a youth-led nonprofit organization based in West Bengal, India, that has been working on promoting active citizenship and creating an intersectional youth space since 2006.

SAYAAN's objectives include strengthening the bond between South Asian countries to bring about positive changes in the lives of queer individuals in the region.

  • SAYAAN: Regional platform for South Asian LGBTQ+ youth activists.
  • Inclusive Membership: Activists from eight countries working for GSM community.
  • Prantakatha Secretariat: Managed by a youth-led nonprofit; seeks support for growth and connectivity.

As the network is in its early stages of development, it seeks support and resources to grow and enhance connectivity among its members. Some of the immediate needs include the creation of its own website and a platform for hosting virtual meetings or events, which will help facilitate communication and collaboration among its members across different geographical areas in South Asia.
